I just had this lovely Italian wine the other day. It’s a so called SuperTuscan so its made of other grapes that the local Sangiovese. The Canonica A Cerreto Sandiavolo 2004 is made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Canonica A Cerreto is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area in the town of Castelnuovo near Sienna. They also make traditional Chianti Classico but this one is their top wine only produced in the best vintages. (more…)

The wines from Pierre Usseglio I

Domaine Pierre Usseglio is first and foremost a maker of Chateauneuf-du-Pape but has also a couple of vineyards just outside the appellation. From these they make a good value Côtes-du-Rhône and a Vin de Table, where Merlot makes up 80 % og the blend.  I gave the 2006 Côtes-du-Rhône 2006 88-89 p. which makes it a good value. It’s a sort of a ”Mini-chateaneuf”. The first set in the Copenhagen tasting of Usseglios wines was the Tradition Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition. (more…)

Domaine Pierre Usseglio

I frequently participate in press-wine tastings in Copenhagen. Normally its about tasting the recent vintage or vintages from a particular wine producer - maybe with one or two older vintages. Nothing wrong with that. Its always the latest vintage that is going on the shelves and where the need for good press is welcomed.

But I must admit the recent press tasting with Domaine Pierre Usseglio from Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Copenhagen was a bit more interesting. We were able to taste 19 different Chateauneufs from this excellent producer. The host was the Danish importer The Wine Company. (more…)

Here follows my tasting notes from The Berlin Tasting in Copenhagen.

No. 1 - 2005 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (Bordeaux)
Dark colour with intense smell of pencil, cigar, currant and spicy wood. It’s full-bodied, rich and concentrated but also with an upfront softness. 96/100. (more…)

Berlin Tasting in Copenhagen

Eduardo Chadwick“Berlin Tasting in Copenhagen” might sound a little confusing? However the Berlin Tasting is a reference to a famous tasting held in Berlin the January 23. 2004. It was held by the Chilean wine producer Eduardo Chadwick from Errazuriz and he had invited 66 wine journalists from all over Europe to taste the best Chadwick wines from Chile against the supernames from Bordeaux and Tuscany. 16 wines were tasted from the vintages 2000 and 2001, among them 2000 Chateau Latour, 2000 Chateau Lafite and 2000 Chateau Margaux.

To everybodys surprise a Chilean wine, 2000 Vinedo Chadwick, took the first spot and with another, 2001 Sena, as second. In the third and fourth spot came 2000 Chateau Lafite and 2001 Chateau Margaux.

This created a lot of debate, specially among journalists not participating in the tasting! How could experts be wrong and so much wrong?

Since then the tasting has been repeated a couple of times and yesterday, May 14 2008, it was held in Copenhagen. This time with the 2005 Bordeaux vintage, the 2004 Tuscan vintage and 2004 & 2005 Chilean vintages. Tough competition for Chile. (more…)
